What Is Stakeholder Analysis?

It is the process used to identify Stakeholders affected by a Change.

This process identifies those affected by the change and those with the ability to influence the outcome.

It should capture information regarding motivations, expectations, concerns, and attitudes toward the change.

It establishes roles within the change initiative and may identify individuals or groups with multiple roles. The process should group stakeholders to facilitate organizational and individual change activities.

Why Is Stakeholder Analysis Important?

It is used in the development of the Change Management Strategy. It is also used to prepare stakeholder engagement, communication, and learning development plans.

Stakeholder Analysis, together with Change Impact Analysis, guides the Change Management Strategy that then determines the budget and resource requirements (the Change Management Plan) for a successful change.

How to Do a Stakeholder Analysis

The information is captured through a variety of methods, such as structured interviews, general discussions, surveys, and questionnaires.


  1. Agree on answers to the following questions:
    • What information needs to be collected?
    • Why the information needs to be collected?
    • How the information will be used?
    • Who the information will be shared with in your organization?
    • How the information will be collected and how often?
    • How the information be formatted for reporting?
  2. Identify Stakeholder or Stakeholder Group.
  3. Prioritize sequence of the Stakeholder Analysis and the information to be collected, using a process appropriate to your organization.
    • An informal process may be based on your or the team’s knowledge of the stakeholders
    • A formal process might be a power influence grid (such as Mendelow’s power-interest grid)
  4. Complete Stakeholder Analysis.
  5. Maintain and update Stakeholder Analysis.

Practice Notes

The amount of information to be collected and the frequency of measurement needs to be determined. Identify data that you can practically capture and that executive leadership will understand and view as important.
